A view across the river Wear to the Fulling Mill and Durham Cathedral in very low light. |
'Chandelier' under Kingsgate bridge. The bridge was designed by Ove Arup who also designed Sydney Opera House. Arup said that of all his work Kingsbridge had been his favourite project, perhaps because he had been born in the nearby city of Newcastle upon Tyne. After his death his ashes were scattered into the river Wear from the bridge. The remainder of the photographs were taken on 28th November 2008 and some show the Christmas lights. Starting at the Market Place.... |
I've aired my opinion on the man on the horse before. The sculpture itself though is of interest as it was one of the first made using the process of electro - plating The sculptor was Raphael Monti (1818 - 1881) and there is an urban myth about the horse having no tongue. |
'Happy Christmas From Durham City' message mounted on the Town Hall. Check out the photos on the link for more information |
Looking up Silver Street towards the Market Place. A street with medieval origins, now almost every shop seems to sell that 'must have' modern means of communication - the mobile phone. |
Probably my most favourite photograph of the night (taken with the sound of music and laughter coming from a bar which is just out of view on on my right) reflections from Elvet Bridge on to the river Wear. Things might have been heating up inside Durham's bars but here on the riverside a very chilly mist is starting to form. |

I've managed to end up back at those gravestones again and with that freezing mist I've decided that's enough photography for one night. But you needn't dash off just yet. Warm yourself up dancing along to my 'Festive Jukebox' below........ |
Merry Christmas to you from - Terry. More walks and photographs coming soon..... |
